Timeshare Exchange

One of the attractions of fractional holiday ownership, apart from the opportunity of owning your own slice of paradise at a much lower cost than would be possible if you had to buy the whole property, is the exchange opportunities that are available to owners these days. When timeshare was first introduced, it was not possible to swap one's weeks for those at another resort or to swap them for different weeks in the same resort. Owners were stuck with holidaying in the same place at the same time, year after year. Nowadays things are very different and there are several major exchange companies that facilitate swaps between people with timeshares across the globe.

Some consumers are under the misapprehension that in order to exchange their weeks for a holiday in another resort, they will have to wait for another owner who has the weeks they are interested in and who would like to stay at their property. With so many timeshares on the market, this is not always the way that it works. Firstly, it may be that somebody has already put in a request for your weeks and a third person has put the weeks that you want up for exchange. In such a case it is normally a fairly straightforward matter to complete the transaction, even though it is not a direct swap.

Owners of peak season weeks in popular resorts will often find that their timeshare is accepted immediately by one of the exchange companies and they are free to choose from the weeks that other members have made available. Many developers now include the first year's membership fee of organisations such as RCI in the price of their timeshares, which means that owners can take advantage of the exchange market right from the start.
